I tried fitting my A4 B5 key internals in to the shell of a newer curved key and ended up spending a day cutting, modding, editing the tracks and relocating buttons on the board to get it to fit.
I got it to fit and semi work in the end but it was a mess. The newer keyless, chrome keys are lovely. They seem cheap enough on ebay but you need to find a friendly keycoder who's happy to have a play trying to get it coded.

They are fully mobile & travel all over the country supplying, cutting & programming car keys so even if you're 200 miles away chances are will probably be in your area at some point. Within a 10 mile radius it's £80 supplied, cut & programmed for KLINE models such as mk4 Golf, mk1 Leon, mk1 A3 etc. Newer CANBUS models such as mk5 Golf, mk2 Leon, mk2 A3/TT etc are £90. Any further & they have to take fuel & travelling time into account. So if you're asking for a price they need a location so they can work a price out taking into account fuel etc. They also need to know model & year of car to confirm this style are compatible. The Audi SMART key with the chrome end is quite sophisticated. It stores a log from the car so when you go for a service they pop it into a reader on the service desk and can see the mileage etc...fault codes...if any additional work may be required before they even look at the car.
