I've just been to the local tyre place, they took the wheel off the car and stuck it on the balancer.
Result of that is that the tyre is fine, its the wheel that's buckled. The inner edge of the rim is all over the place, but fixable according to them. They have given me the details of a local wheel refurb place who should be able to straighten it out. Now running on the spare which is in a pretty poor state of repair, but at least its round.
