Why did you need one of them out of interest ? Not something that normally sees any wear. Sorry have just read your 1st post properly..

It's a fairly common fault with the D2s. Audi made a modified seal (cheap) but you also need the modified flange to fit it (expensive).

But as I and Mike found, if your car is late enough it seems to have been an undocumented running change....

If its undocumented is there anyway of knowing whether you have the new type flange/seal? (My S8 was registered July '02)

I don't think so. You will need to pull the flange out to see if it has the recess for the new type of seal.

Yep, unless you're lucky enough to have a previous bill for replacing the seal in your service history to confirm if it's the updated seal or not. You can't fit the updated seal without the newer flange type.

Given yours is a 2002 I'd be checking it before ordering the part - both seal and flange should be available next day via TPS so shouldn't be too much aggro for garage doing the job (or you can buy it from Mike for less!)

I checked the previous works invoices etc but no sign of the work having been done (I would have thought that The Laird had got it done, but no!). I was thinking of buying it as insurance - I dont have an issue at the mo' - but wondered if there was a way of checking without pulling it apart.

Bump. Still have this here. I doubt you'll be able to find one cheaper anywhere else.
