Does anyone have a definitive list of the parts required to convert a Japanese spec Audi A8 2004 4.2 to UK/Euro/even US? The Jap spec Radio, TV and Navigation are all proprietary. The basic car controls are in English but Radio cant pick up non-Jap frequencies and the Navigation uses their GPS standard.

Ive just got this A8 so I dont know everything yet (!)... specifically where is the main MMI controller/module located?

I have the following parts:

Glovebox:
Audi 6 CD Stacker (standard?)
Audi Minidisk Player (standard?)
An "ETC" card reader, some sort of Toll Card reader for Japan.

Trunk:
KBox Radio - 4E0 035 541 A
DVD Nav - 4E0 919 977
TV Module - 4E0 919 146
Amp module - couldnt see a PN but is labelled "D3 Japan"

Possibly first conversion of its kind? On here anyway....

Photos would be very interesting. From that, it might be more obvious to us what needs changing. Plus, I'm really quite interested in what the Jap setup looks like

No doubt a8parts would put you a bundle together if you need quite a bit of stuff..

The only real issue I foresee is going to be component protection.

Apart from the TV tuner and AMI all the other bits of the MMI have CP and will require a friendly main dealer or a local independent who has hookup to Audi HQ to remove it.

Without removal then things either do not work at all, or have limited functionality. For example, only one audio channel from the Bose amp, the CD changer will only play for a very short while before stopping etc.

I guess you could get away with replacing the tuner module and the Nav box, both have CP which would need removing.

This is a very interesting conversion. The radio and nav unit have the same hardware code as European versions (although the revision suffix is missing from the Nav unit from your description). I'm sure the software version may differ from our European cars. You should invest in VCDS to scan your car fully so we know exactly what you have installed. It may be a case of coding each module to tell it what region it is in, but that is just a guess for now. And as Mannyo said, let's hope CP don't kick in.

Keep us informed

Humm... Interesting...

http://navnz.com/japan-imports-2/

Just to add,
This page also gives us some information.
http://www.prestigemotors.co.nz/audi-navigation.html
It seems that it's NZ that has different standards to Japan, UK and Singapore.

NZ doesnt have diff standards (my UK 850CSi I brought over works fine as is), its Japan thats being awkward.

Yes there are a load of Japan import conversion places, but you are talking:

$399 for MMI conversion
$699 for Radio
$1699 for Sat Nav

Its been suggested (from Audiworld post) that all I need todo is update the MMI.. but I see literally no info on changing the MMI from Japan to ROW. Even the setup button does something different here and the Sat Nav is connected to the LVDS input on the MMI (ie like its a direct screen for the Nav, not a TV pass through).

VCDS- I do have VCDS (had Audi's before, bought it from Ross Tech about 7years ago!) but the Module 07 Control Head, doesnt respond. Infact, VCDS is having trouble connecting to nearly any module in the car, presumably as it doesnt support Japanese spec VAG cars properly.

Photos attached anyhow!

All sounds rather strange, if your sat nav connects directly to the screen does that mean you have no access to menus for car, radio cd etc?

If you could post a full scan of your car that might help.

You mentioned on the other fourm that you have vcds but it's not working correctly, is yours genuine and can compatible?

The Sat Nav takes over the screen when Nav is pressed, its like running two Operating Systems. One view is standard Audi (and Radio etc) and the other is custom (Audi JP OEM) Nav stuff. They do it this way (I suspect) as Kanji cannot be read easily on the low res standard Nav input. Their implementation is direct to screen.

The VagCom is legit and (I believe) compatible, I had no issues with my older VW Phaeton 2004 (or any of the other era cars Ive had). I believe its due to specific region coding with the Japan spec that its not understanding. Ill give it a shot again later.

See below some screenshots of the versions of HW and SW in the car.
