Upgrade to S8 brakes
Hi,
I have a 2009 A8L with the 4.2 TDI. Im thinking of removing the DPF and remapping it to get a little more push on the trottle :P But before i do that I want to upgrade my brakes. Does anyone know if i can just buy new caliper brackets and brake discs and reuse my calipers (fronts and rear)? Or do i need to buy new calipers as well? Regards Kenneth |

I beleive the calipers are different, I'm assuming you want to fit steel discs and not the ceramic.
A popular conversion is fitting the w12 brakes and they are easier to find due to higher numbers of cars being broken for spares. There is a few threads on this forum about fitting them

I know it's off topic, but I wouldn't recommend a DPF removal these days - you can still remap with DPF fitted. The MoT will be tightened again in the future, due to changes in the European Roadworthiness Directive, which will halve the smoke limits for more modern diesels. It has to be implemented in the next 2 years IIRC.

Most 4.2tdi's come with W12 brakes as standard, mine has them and if you fit high performance pads and discs they aren't far off the performance of an S. S8 Brembo's are better than the S8 ATE system but are very expensive for a used set.

How can i figure out if my 4.2 TDI has the W12 brakes? Arent the brembo brakes only ceramic for our d3?

My 4.2TDi had the 360mm brakes (or thereabouts), as did my 4.2 PF petrol, were the W12 and S8 not the same size as each other at around 380mm?
Which I think needs bigger calipers (as well as the discs and pads obviously).

I was hoping it was the same size of the caliper but only needed discs and caliper brackets..
I thought the 4.2 TDI had the 2 piston caliper but maybe its only 1? Regards Kenneth |

Check the build sticker in the boot or service book for PR codes
1LG - 323 or 321mm front brake discs depending on chassis number 1LL&1LM - 360mm front discs, same caliper as 321mm discs above, different carrier 1LJ - 385mm front discs 1LK - 385mm for S8, I think these are the same as other 385mm just black colour instead of silver 1LW - 380mm front discs, ceramic.

Not sure what the stopping difference is (unless you want the visual difference), but the 360s stopped mine fine and I didn't exactly do Driving Miss Daisy
