Just been to check (SWMBO thinks that I am acting like someone with a close relative in intensive care). Starting to look like its the issue of the fuel delivery system not picking up fuel in the tank but as Neil was suggesting by his comment about getting some more fuel into the tank. Thats what the garage is doing now.

The cause of that issue (if it is that) is, according to the service manual for the fuel system, the seal between the the pump unit and the adapter plate -
◆ If the centering stud is not pressed into funnel, the fuel delivery unit will not seal against the adapter plate. ◆ If the baffle housing is not properly sealed, the engine will cut out due to fuel starvation when the tank is still 1/3 ... 1/4full. But I am not sure whether that seal is achieved by a rubber seal or whether its just an interference fit between the components and why that seal would have been lost just by being unused for a month...

Maybe the seal just dried out and failed? I know that can happen in the air con if it's not used for a while.

It's been a while since I last worked on fuel pump but if I remember correctly it is as marked up in pictures below. Stage 1 output from the pump takes fuel from baffle housing and deliver fuel to suction jet pumps which pick up fuel from lower parts of fuel tank and dump it in baffle housing, stage 2 takes fuel from baffle housing and delivers it to the engine. So if the the engine was working for the while there was fuel in the baffle housing but it stopped working because it ran out of fuel in baffle housing. It could be because stage 1 output from the pump is not working or if the fuel from stage 1 output was not going to the fuel jet pumps. Maybe there was just not enough fuel to get the fuel jet pumps working properly before it ran out. If you put some fuel in the tank it goes straight in the baffle housing so garage can put small amount in like 0.5-1l in the tank and see if it will work and keep working after that amount is used.
There is o-ring where the pipes join for stage 1 circuit, I guess it might have gone but don't see why.

Couple more questions to consider:
1. Have you had fuel this low before 2. Is the fuel gauge showing correct amount of fuel in the tank

The fuel level has certainly been lower than this before. However, the garage believe that there is not much in the tank and that there was nothing being delivered at the return line near the engine but felt air coming through. They are going to get 20L and see if that gets things working. I have been reading the Service Manual on the fuel system (from the Tech Dump) and now understand the system better - I think. The reason i thought there were 2 pumps is the reference to Stage 1 and 2 and the fact that the picture you show of the pump is not the same as the one shown on our sponsors page and also different to that shown in a Youtube "how-to".

aaahhhh! I was confused by the white plastic surround and the filter (?) unit on the bottom. I now see that the body of the pump is on the inside of those. (Lightbulb moment!)
Thanks Ainars. ![]() The situation is now that the my indy mechanic spent most of the day inside the boot of my car checking out the pump. He is smaller and younger than me and now understands why I didnt feel up to doing this! He pulled the pump and checked all the seals and thought that they were all in good order. Having put more fuel in the tank, it all started and ran perfectly. The plan is now to run it until it reaches 1/4 full and see if the problem happens again. He was concerned about the pumps performance and i showed them the method from the service manual for testing flow so, if it happens again, thats the next step. In the meantime I am carrying 10lts of petrol around in the boot!
