Default 4.0 tdi

When looking for my first 8 I saw the 3.0tdi 4.0tdi and the 4.2tdi the 4.2 was out of my price range and I didn't look into it properly and thought a 4.0tdi was in the £400+ tax bracket so I ended up with a 3.0tdi, now can you guys talk me out of not wanting a 4.0tdi, I'm a bugger for changing cars, my e39 didn't last 12 months.

Whilst reading up about them before my purchase I was under the impression that the 4.0tdi had some archaic fuel injection but it uses similar 1600 bar piezo injectors like the 3.0tdi, if I'd of known all this before hand I'd of gone out and gotten the 4.0 esp as iv always wanted a v8 to tick that box and the MPG isn't a million miles away from each other, oh and the 4.0tdi is usually better specced, any 4.0 tdi owners here that can give me there real world opinion? I like the 3.0tdi but I think I'm pining for that extra power the 4.0tdi gives

Easy.

The good news: the 4.0TDI has an inherent design fault that could break your engine, they are best avoided if possible.

The bad news: you should save up for a 4.2

I'm no expert, far from it, but from what I've read (admittedly no real world experience) the 4.0 is a dog. Best avoided. The 4.2 offers similar MPG to the 3.0 and has a big chunk of more power, larger displacement plus an extra turbo. Only thing that put me off was the increased tax. Best part of £500 each year would leave me feeling even more bitter and twisted!

Save up for a 4.2 if you must have a diesel. Or get a 3.0 remapped which will be cheaper, and more reliable than a 4.0 and about as quick.

i too am looking to move into a D3.
i have read lots of reviews re. 4.0.
there is not much positive written about them.
4.2 are nice but expensive, and like others have said 3.0+chip, are plenty quick.

Thanks for the comments guys, iv already got a 3.0tdi, a PF d3 I love it but sometimes I urge more power, I even think I wouldn't be happy with a 4.2 chipped and that'd end up quicker than the S8 lol! None the less a 4.2 is out of my price range at the moment so I'll just chip my 3.0 instead
