Default A8 D2 4.2L Quattro 1997

It's with a heavy heart I do this but it seems like the best option...

132k miles, full service history with log book and most receipts. Cambelt changed at 81k miles. Runs very well but has a bit of an issue with auto gearbox whirring in second gear and inconsistent changes - as per this (rather extensive) thread. It seems to behave itself pretty well in tiptronic mode though.

Body and interior in very condition for age. Some marks but no dents. Engine has always been completely fine and I'm sure has loads of life left in it.

Air con and all electrics work as they should, it is in fantastic condition for an 18 year old car. Drives beautifully (gear problem notwithstanding). MOT to the end of the year. I will be very sad to see it go but I can't really justify sinking more money in to it and it's really just not that practical for my current needs. If I wasn't carting bikes around on a regular basis I'd be very tempted to do a proper repair/replacement on the gearbox - the car really doesn't deserve to be on the scrapheap just yet!

Price, I really don't know - make me an offer?

Hi,

Might help if you say whereabouts you are in the country?

Cheers

Oops, sorry!

I'm just near Hemel Hempstead north of London.

Great news on the gearbox issue - just picked the car up from the mechanic having it topped off with another 2.5L of oil and it is back to shifting as smoothly as ever whether full auto or tiptronic. See other thread for details.

As I've been looking over the car I noticed a few more things which bear mentioning.

Some paint damage to near side rear wheel arch - predates my ownership but is significant enough not to buff out. Though a mechanical polish would mack it look a lot better.

Additional paint damage to top of front bumper direcly in front of grille. Assume it overheated at some point but no signs of soing the same while in my possession.

Centre and left plastic grille inserts below front bumper are missing.

Driver's side middle arm rest snapped off - still have the armrest and have been meaning to drill a hole and insert a rod to reattach but haven't got around to it.

Has a genuine audi removable tow ball!

They do that.
Best thing to do is replace them with facelift armrests.

2003 D2 FL S8. Irish Green Pearl/Beige. Solar sunroof, auto-dim mirrors, electric rear seat functions and extended leather. Ski hatch retrofit. Aftermarket reversing camera. DVB-T and XCarlink now removed as redundant.
2016 Volvo V40 T5 Cross Country (4WD) with ALL the toys including adaptive cruise etc. etc. Osmium Grey with Blonde/Charcoal leather interior. Polestar performance "optimisation". (Even rarer than a D2 S8!) Oh, and a brand new engine at just under 30,000 miles on the factory one!
Finally: gone, but not forgotten.....
1998 D2 PF S8. Agate Grey/Platinum. Every option (I think) except electric rear seats, Tiptronic steering wheel, ski hatch, towbar & dimming door mirrors.
e.g. Cruise control, NavPlus/TV, Bose, GSM, Xenons, Solar roof, Parking sensors, Alcantara/leather everywhere of course. (internal dimming mirror added later)
1998 (very early) Ford Focus 1.8 Zetec; ABS/TCS, Heated screen/mirrors, Aircon. Added Auto-dim mirror, Leather seats, Trip computer, Cruise control, OEM Ford SatNav with CD changer.
And before that a lot of Rover 800s, a few oddities, a lovely Triumph Dolomite 1850HL with Overdrive and way back in my schooldays an Austin Seven aka Mini 850!
