On closer inspection I believe the pads are not on flush to the discs. See pics below. Surely the shiny clips which are still sellotaped together would assist in keeping the pads in the correct position. I'd like anyone's opinion before I go back to the garage.

They don't look very flush to the disc but it's quite hard to tell anything else from the pics sorry

Cheers. Thanks. Apologies for poor pic quality but best I could do through the alloys. A mate drove it last night and he agreed the brake pedal very spongy and when he checked brake fluid he said it was disgusting. Black not clear. Another issue. Not blaming garage for that. Just might ask them to replace brake fluid and bleed system and also re seat the pads and calipers correctly. This time.

Spot on yes I would do both - the fluid can make a huge difference

The brake fluid is supposed to be changed every 24 months, regardless of miles. There's a couple of very good reasons for this, one of which is technical and the other is the desire not to find yourself without brakes. Which you can be sure will most likely happen at an inconvenient moment.

The pads are chamfered on the edge, i reckon what you're seeing there is just that. It would be very difficult to fit them that far out of flatness within the caliper.
Go with replacing the fluid as stated it has a life as it's hygroscopic, syringe the old out of the tank (as much as possible) and pump the rest out on the pedal, it can be bought in different colours too, so you can see when it's coming through when bleeding.
