I'm guessing that the error messages are from module 09: Cent. Elect. (J519)? This would report an error from J400 (wiper motor control unit) being a slave on a LIN connection from J519.
You're correct that the control unit is the motor itself. Certainly the wiper motor control unit would be my first place to inspect and diagnose. If you needed a new or used part, the part number is 4E2955119B or 4E2955119C.
I wouldn't think that your wiper stalk is faulty, or steering column electronics control unit as these would report a different message in VCDS.
