Default New purchase - but missing some MMI menus!

Hi guys.

First post! I'm Mark and I've been saving for an A8 for a while now however my dad beat me to it and bought an 05 plate silver 3.0tdi with 45k on it which he picked up today.

We've had a play with it and all appears to be good, however it appears to be missing a few menus from the car MMI screen.

When pressing Car, it defaults to a menu where I can set options for wipers, see the VIN number etc but I do not see any air suspension controls. There's also no working soft keys for User or Systems, so we cannot change the seat memory positions, add new fingerprints etc. Is this something that requires a software update? There's just nothing written there where I think there should be. Its quite annoying having to move the seat every time we get in it!

Secondly, the car has the original map disc in, to update the maps is it just a case of popping a new up to date disc in the boot?

Thirdly, a little one with the HVAC controls. When changing the temp dial on the passenger side, although it does correctly operate the passenger side, the display shows drivers. It's the same from the drivers side too. Change the drivers one, and it shows passenger on the screen, even if it does change the drivers side. Is this just a case of swapping something back in a menu somewhere? We never noticed it when we test drove it.

The car had a new battery fitted by the dealer before we picked it up, is it possible this is the cause of some of these problems?

Thanks a lot guys!

Mark

Your first port of call will be to buy a VCDS lead if your planning on fixing yourself, they all seem rather odd faults if I'm honest, get the VCDS lead run an auto scan find what crops up, the fact you have no air suspension on main screen of CAR is weird too, have you tried pressing return button to see if it brings you back out of the wipers menu? Have you any suspension light on dash?

Google "2g mmi secret menu" and see if you can get it up and see what's enabled or disabled, you may need VCDS for enabling the secret menu and you may also need it for changing the sat nav disc (can have the eject button disabled)

Nav disc is just a case of swapping for a new one, I heard that they can be found on the Internet for free, and someone told me that if I was ever to find one of these downloads that it should be burned to disc at the slowest speed possible for it to work properly

Edit: oh and did the dealer remember to code the new battery to the car? Was it and Audi or specialist garage as forgetting to code the battery can cause issues with charging, it won't damage the car but you may find yourself with a flat battery.

If your both going to have A8's then I can't say enough how much VCDS will save you in the long run

Thanks for your help! I'm going to order the genuine VCDS cable over the weekend. I'd heard of it before but had never really looked into it. There appears to be quite a few places on the internet selling either cheap copies, or the genuine thing for more than it costs to get it from Gendan!

I'll see about the secret menu too. When I was reading last night I saw something mentioned about the driver and passenger sides being changed in that secret menu. That might fix the HVAC screen issue... If I can find it.

I've tried pressing return yes, it won't back up any further out of the car menu. Seems odd because everything else in MMI works fine that we can tell.

Not sure if the battery was coded, but the battery health screen does show 100%.

Thanks again!

Sounds like a coding issue.

IIRC the control head, or instrument cluster can be coded to the Audi model (e.g A4, A8 etc) and if its not an air suspension model, it simply doesn't display the right options. I've definitely seen an air-suspension can without air suspension options before because of this.

Definitely need a VCDS cable, and/or some beer tokens to get someone to help you get the coding right imo....

Sounds good to me. Is there anyone in the area of the Wirral that would be able to do this? Obviously beer tokens to anyone that can recode it. Don't mind picking up VCDS myself, but with not being familiar with the software, I'd rather not just jump straight in to coding!

Cheers.

I bought the original cable from Genden, it's worth it. You certainly do need to invest in VCDS if you're going to have a few '8s in the family!

The HVAC issue can be done without VCDS, but you do need the green menu...

Go to the MMI secret menu (car+setup)

Go to Diag Settings > Car Menus Maske

Uncheck Linkslenker (this is the setting for left hand drive vehicles)

Restart the MMI

Welcome and good luck

Here is a bit more detail on the hidden menu
http://www.audi-resource.com/mmiaccess.php
and hidden menu functions..
http://www.audi-resource.com/mmihiddenmenu.php
You can also do this through VCDS but it is easier to use the hidden green menu.

Thanks for the help guys. Now got the latest map disc in working with no issues. Still not got any car settings though. I've tried to access the hidden menu but I'm assuming it has been locked out on the car. Holding the buttons down does nothing.

This is how the menu looks to me, and the software version on the MMI kit.

Does the set up button light up when you press car? If so press set up button again and see if that brings up the air suspension menu, the software is 0770 it's an early version but you should still have all the options as normal

Yup setup lights up like normal, it just shows the menu visible in the photo instead of anything else.

Is it worth trying a software update on it? I have found the CD images on what I believe to be a trusted site but am not sure if I can just jump to 5570 or not.
