I'm going Back !
Dear Friends,
Some of you may know that Angela and I went to India last year as volunteer teachers in two Indian school in Tamil Nardu. The town is called Karaikudi and the schools are the S.M.S Girls Higher Secondary School and the SMSV Higher Secondary School for Boys. We spent 3 weeks with them last year teaching spoken English and fitting out a classroom in each school with internet, projectors PCs and screens and helping rebuild their computer labs. Last year we had a donation of money from the West Country Gunnery Instructors association that help buy tablets and private donations of several laptops and projectors for each school. We also purchases personal CD players for the teachers with CDs of talking books in English to help them improve their ability to teach English. The children's written work, Grammar, punctuation etc is exemplary but before us the last native English speaker to visit the School was in 1913 when the boys school was opened! The irony is that there are streams of pupils who are taught in English but generations of English teachers have learned their skills from their Tamil forebears. Therefore we are going back, this year to set up a library of English story books for children supported by MP3 players with the talking book version so they can read and hear English being spoken by a native speaker. Initially we were going to collect books and have them shipped to India, however, this has proved a logistical nightmare. To take them as excess baggage turned out to cost more than if we buy them in India! Thanks to Amazon we can indeed do this. Soooo, we turn to you our friends with a small request, we have set up a crowd funding page at Just Giving and should you have a couple of quid you can spare would appropriate any donation. We have set a target of £1700 which will cover the purchase of the books. We are funding the MP3 players ourselves. We also have a blog running of our adventures. I admire what you are doing, education is the best gift anyone can give a child.
May I recommend you look into an alternative to just giving as they skim a percentage and there are cheaper and some free alternatives.
