My tow bar was a bit of a pain at first but after a clean and grease of the tow bar and the hole it goes into its been fine.

It is a little bit tight but like IT says, "They're a reassuringly snug fit"

Default Where's the bloody trailer!!

Ignoring the double entendre minefield that's opening up here, it seems about time for The Laird to tell the towbar/trailer story.......

Well he's not here so I'll tell it. A couple of years back I had a trailer but no towbar and The Laird had a towbar on his '8 but no trailer. So we used to combine trips to the local dump (cowp, in Scottish). One day he came down to hitch up to my trailer. He fitted the towball to the socket and we connected the trailer (no safety chain.....) and after jumping up and down on the hitch to make sure all was well we set off, chatting etc. Got to dump - WHERE's THE BLOODY TRAILER!! Oh sh1t! set off down the road expecting to find mayhem and carnage only to find it where we started off. The tow bar had dropped out the socket as we drove away and was still attached the trailer drawbar. Feeling rather stupid we hitched up again, gave it a lot of welly to ensure it was home, but the indicators were only partially showing. This time arrived aat the entrance to the dump (with trailer). However, 50m short of the entrance, there was thump and we realised that the towball had dropped out! Oh sh1t (part 2). The Laird, rather than get rear-ended by my trailer, bravely drives on executing a sharp right in to the dump whilst I watch the trailer carry on down the road on the opposite carriageway before coming to a stop against the kerb. Amazingly no traffic was coming the other way. The guys in the car behind helpfully told us that the towbar was lying in the road backaways.
Moral of the story - keep your hole well lubricated/free of dirt and make sure the towbar goes fully home!

*ahem* there speaks a navy man

You know when the towball has hit home properly, as the knob springs round, but mine does seem to be 'snugger' than most by the looks of it.

Yes, keep wiggling n banging till the knob spins. Then you know shes home. Last thing you want is it falling out mid action.....

On a marginally more serious note, there is a red cap that is supposed to be fitted into the towbar swanneck recess when its not in use, which stops the socket getting all clogged up. They often go walk about, or may be left in the spare wheel well of the car with the owner not realising what it is.... I do make an effort to make sure thats always in, which means no dirt can ever enter....

Mine was missing the red plastic cover.
They are pretty cheap from your local trailer supplier.

Mine has a cover.. possibly a bit grubby as the previous owner did use it regularly.

Don't forget to grease your balls and knob as well as cleaning your hole.

Ah, but you also have to clean and lube the little balls on the shaft!
