Default Cracked glass

Came home yesterday, just went to get my jacket off the back seat and noticed a full length crack in the rear off side glass! I can see where a stone or something has hit the glass and caused the damage, thank god for the 8's double glazing as that would have gone with a right old bang if it was just toughened. Can't say I heard or noticed anything on the drive home which is a mix of B and A roads dual carriage ways so could have been anywhere I guess with the state of the roads these days!

Will ring the insurance company today but I have to say I am not keen on some glass company taking my pride and joy apart and I know they may try to insist on using them....anyone had this done previously ?
Cheers Glyn

The forum sponsors have definitely done it as they replaced my single pane glass on my first '8 (a 2.8) with twin pane glass. If you're anywhere close to them , it might be worth a call.

I just checked in Etka and the accoustic glass is about £360 RRP

Worth seeing if sponsors have one with the right colour, as I imagine they wouldn't want a fortune for it.

Only upside with the insurance route is you're unlikely to find a pattern part for the glass so it should be OEM

I phoned the insurers today and went through to the auto glass line they run. They assured me it will be an Audi part and they are ordering it in!
I also told them if they manage to damage my motor I will be looking to sue them, I like to give them a hint I am an awkward sod from the word go!
The car has the rear windows darkened which I did mention let's see when they turn up if they have the correct one,
Thankfully as they are laminated the car is driveable toughened and she would have been sat in the garage waiting.
I'll let you know how I get on!
On a positive note the TVR Chimaera I am in the process of restoring was returned from the paint shop this afternoon I am so damn happy with the finish the lads have managed to get it looks superb in the sunshine. I'll pop a picture up when I have them uploaded
Cheers

Quick update
Auto glass turned up
Asked him if he had done an A8 side window before ....No ...was the answer ...instilled me with confidence did that
They should be like the other Audis he said
Before he started I asked him if they had sent the right part ....as I have privacy glass in the rear. He opened the box which was an Audi part...thankfully they had sent the right shade of glass, sadly for the wrong side
So we start again
Thank god it's laminated or the car would be laid up!
Audi wanted 450 for the job, insurance firm won't let me go there and state they will only pay 100 if I do!
I am rininging them direct later today to point out the cost of the glass and the bill I will be sending for my time as I spent a morning at home for this latest waste of time!

I actually spent the day on my TVR which is nearly finished after eight months of hard work !
Cheers Glyn

I'm about to get Autoglass to do my windscreen through my insurance as it got an 'advisory' on the last MOT. Insurance company says it'll cost £75 and not affect my no claims discount.
Pleased to hear that they use genuine parts, so I'm going to check the spec from the build sticker before I call them.

They use OEM glass for side windows because nobody else makes/supplies them due to low demand. For windscreen it will most likely be cheaper aftermarket item unless it's rare piece and not available in aftermarket like heated version maybe.

Neither Autoglass or insurance wanted to give me genuine Audi windscreen for A6 when it cracked, after long dispute insurance finally agreed to pay for genuine windscreen to be replaced at Audi premises, I just had to pay £25 extra excess- £100 instead of usual £75.

I concur with above from painful personal experience of some dreadful 'Guardian' branded glass on our a6!

They'll sell you all sorts of lines about unmarked glass being factory supplied -
Basically when you speak to the installers tell them if it doesn't have the Audi rings on it you'll send them off without doing the job

Also ensure they know they need thicker than standard foam to stop it creaking. Think the elsawin guide for windscreen replacement is on here somewhere?

I had the screen replaced on the D3 few years back and you need to point out its fitted with acoustic glass they fitted an OeM part to mine and the fitter did. Good job
My worry is them stripping the door for me!
Cheers

Quick update on the Autoglass farce.

Another fitter turned up yesterday as agreed ...at the end of the three hour time slot. And yes it was raining again
First question was do you have the right part...
Quick look in the van revealed an o/s rear window for an A8 but guess what ...this one was light tint not privacy tint
After we exchanged our thoughts on autoglass and the staff, i asked him, have you done one of these before
No he replied and we dont have the technical information on this car to help !

At this point i bid him fairwell and got straight on the phone to the broker Chris Knott. They arranged for the LV highway people to ring me, sadly i missed the call and I eventually got through to someone who was clearly not interested in my concerns or the fact i have now had two days ruined work time lost etc.

I insisted he escalate this and have yet to hear back from them! I think he was just keen to get off the phone and sod me and my broken window. As i pointed out, you find out how good a firm is when things go wrong, so to date they are pretty sh1te
Audi want £440 inc vat to do the job and i think someone posted on here the part is £360! Its a no brainer to me. But if i dont use their repairers they pay £100 only. At this rate i might just do that and stick them with a claim for compensation loss of earnings etc..although i suspect i would have a battle on my hands and frankly i am against the compo culture in the main.

I will update as things progress
Cheers Glyn
