Default New Motor

The S8 is a lovely car, but I think I need to be a little more sensible. The way it drinks fuel is just starting to get on my nerves now, and I have never actually had an attachment to the car like I did with my old A8. I have found a contender for a replacement (below). The plus points are, 96 so a four speed box. Full Audi service history, blinds, solar,Bose the main reason however is LPG . I would also have enough money left over to get it wrapped/sprayed in the colour of my choice, I can do this for about a grand.

I am hoping to advertise my S8 around the £6,000 mark. I think, looking on the autotrader this is a fair price and fits in quite nicely with the others for sale. The only thing is that the A8 I am looking at is very overpriced especially when considering the mileage, its just the LPG thats making me think twice..

http://search.autotrader.co.uk/es-uk...cleRegLetter=N

This is my second option, a PF S8 in my favourite colour with all the extras I want. Low mileage and a brand new box fitted by Audi, so I assume a years warranty left.. If I manage to get it for £3k how much am I looking at for a fully fitted LPG system?

http://search.autotrader.co.uk/es-uk...cleRegLetter=R

And the third option, a wild card. Please keep an open mind when looking at this and no childish remarks please

http://search.autotrader.co.uk/es-uk...cleRegLetter=X

Need some help deciding now, but the bottom line is. The S8 has to go and I don't want to spend any extra upgrading to a FE I don't think its worth it.

This could very well be my last D2, I want to start saving for a RS 6 plus which I want in about two years with an odd D3 in between..

The Ming Blue R reg S8 with the cream interior is just so sexy..... Wait! That's why I have mine.

For a good LPG kit expect to pay 2.5K and it will pay for itself in about 22k miles.

The first one looks tired.... 150K miles will make it feel like a dog compared to that low mileage example you also have....

The back end is sagging low, due to the LPG and its been towing as well... Yes, the 4 speed boxes are bullet proof, but the rest will take its toll... As I always say, dont try and find a car that is already LPG converted, it will never be what you are looking for.

As Mike says, it will take 22000 miles to pay back for a conversion anyway, so is it really worth it? Do you do that many miles? Why not just use the 335 more often?

A good spec A8 without a conversion will be cheapish money and return a far better MPG then you're getting now in an S8 - Its the S8 gear ratios that are killing you mostly, you dont seem to have a problem with the MPG of the A8...

The ming blue one does look very nice, well looked after if appearances are anything to go by, but with be low MPG and you'll have paid 6K by the time you LPG it....

Hi Singh,

Loving the ming blue one there too!

With a new box which will be properly serviced going fwd and a new LPG system, i reckon you'll have yourself a sweet motor mate.

I agree with Ian, the silver option looks tired and sagging at the back and I'd always go for as lower miles as you can get Amar - the second one does look really nice and not bad money but maybe keep looking for a sweet A8 2.8/3.7/4.2 ?

The silver ones a dog
The Beemer has more toys, elec rear seats, comfort front seats(Hinged back rest in upper middle). It's pretty compared to the newer (Banglised) models, But the 8 is still fresher (stlyewise). IMO
The Mingers the one that floats my boat

Hi Amar
This is the one that gets me excited . OK I know you said you don't want an FL or even an S, but it's loaded, looks like its not been farted about with and with the later S8's you get that sport setting on the gear shift so if you feeling to lazy to use the tip you can slip your shifter into S and let the box take care of everything in a much more immediate and exciting way (and thirstier I guess).
Just a thought

By the way saw your silver 8 at Bens on Saturday. Nice car and I guess once Audi get their ass into gear he'll have you sorted with the correct timing belt.
Cheers
Nick

Hi tonupkid. Thats a very nice S8, but its higher mileage than mine and the only spec it has above mine are the Xenon pluses/S mode gearbox which aren't that important to me anyway. Also, it would put me in the expensive tax bracket whereas my car misses it by a few weeks. My car is also in very good condition with an extensive Audi history £3.5k bill in March! Its the fuel cost I was hoping to bring down, a colour change would be nice though I suppose Although I must say, I get so many comments on how lovely the green is from strangers at the petrol station etc...
Ian, can't use the 335 all the time as mileage needs to be kept low and because its got ISOFIX I am going to give it to my sister as her daily car now as she is soon expecting a baby. The 2nd A8 is our family car and not my primary car although I get to use it, not all the time (also dont want to ruin low miles)! So I need a reliable, cheap to run D2 and I was hoping to free up some cash at the same time. I still don't see the problem with the first silver one. Its got a FASH, 4 speed box. The whole front suspension has been changed and a £2.5k LPG conversion! I'm not looking for a mint example, it seems perfect. My old A8 had 220k on it when I sold it and was still going strong, what does the sagging suspension suggest? Don't worry I'm not going to go out and buy it then complain to all you lot that told me not to buy it. I hate it when people say 'I told you so' lol.
Neil, with all due respect to 2.8/3.7 owners I just can't go down the 2.8/3.7 route. The 2.8 is just too slow, the 3.7 is just as thirsty yet so much less powerful! The biggest downfall though is that the PF are both front wheel drive!
Sorry about the long post, will have to keep my eyes on the market and see what happens.
Shall I just put mine up for sale and see what happens? Then be S8less untill I can find something, should put me in a better place to bargain too.

P.S

Tonupkid - Yeah the silver A8 has had a bit of pampering from Ben, can't wait to drive it back from Burton later

I dont understand why this S8 is on £5k with a few hours left.

Mine is newer, less mileage, better spec, full Audi history and a near mint example, yet only made just over £4k. I thought it could be down to the colour, but no. This is the same colour. Am I doing something wrong?
