Hmm...not good. Probably the only consolations in being hit by an older driver are that -
(A) they tend to admit that is was their fault on the spot and, (B) they also tend to be driving more slowly at the time.... Hopefully that was the case here, and there was no other damage, and you get it sorted soon. Last edited by tintin; 22nd July 2016 at 08:02 AM. |

Totally agree! We have an OAP estate in Crediton where you take your life in your hands every time you pass the junction because they have no ****ing clue about oncoming traffic and frequently don't even bother to look before pulling out. Someone was critically injured on Wednesday when their Lupo got T-boned by an A3 which didn't even slow down for the junction. Those of us who know the area use extreme caution driving around there.
Hope you can get if fixed without too much hassle! |

I'll agree with your toughts on testing the over 70s (but only for 8 more years!). Really sorry to see that Mike - hope you can sort it without too much difficulty. It's made me bring the dash cam up my list of priorities!

Ouch!!
![]() I know just how you must feel Mike. An elderly neighbour has reversed into my car a couple of times while manoeuvring out of his garage. I had my bumper repaired at my own cost the last time, but made sure he was aware what he'd done (he initially denied it until I pointed out the large dent in his car, covered in my car's black paint, and the red paint transfer on my car from his). Now his wife stands behind my car every time he reverses out of his garage, shouting loudly at him and banging on his car every time he almost runs her over! (which happens frequently). He really shouldn't be driving. His driving ability is worse than that of a drunk to be honest; there's a real risk that he's going to kill someone. However, I don't think the problem is age per se. Some older/elderly folk are very good drivers and, conversely, some younger people are very poor drivers, so I don't think it would be fair to insist on frequent retesting for everyone over a certain age. I do think things like age, inexperience and accident history should be trigger factors though. Perhaps the solution would be to devise a test for such higher-risk groups that provides a driver competence and response-time rating, rather than a simple pass/fail. Those that score highly should not be required to be retested as often as those who obtain a very low score.

It does pose some interesting questions. My father is now 90 and still drives.....rather badly at times as his spatial awareness seems to have got worse over the last 5 years. However, his driving improved remarkably last year when he had his cataracts done!! So I think eyesight plays a large part in elderly drivers capabilities.
He was a police road motor patrol driver in the days of Wolsely 6/90s and Jags so he has a good driving pedigree and had a really good awareness/anticipation of others, reading the road ahead, driving within the limits of the car/road conditions etc. and up to the age of 80 odd was perfectly OK but now shows a lack of confidence as he gets frailer. He should be given a test I think but all he actually needs to renew his licence(as is compulsory over 70) is a Doctors note.
