Default A8 Noob - MMI 2G with Bose Aux In

Hello gents

Am picking up my first A8 tomorrow - a 2007 Quattro SE 3.0 TDI. Am very excited!

From reading the forums in the last week, Ive realised that the ICE system on this car is a bit of a complex beast and Im sure I will be asking many daft questions over the next couple of weeks. So here goes, the first round of daft questions:

My car has a colour screen, nav, a 6 disc changer in the glovebox and a dvd changer in the boot. Theres also Bose badges all over the interior. So, from this Im assuming I have an MMI 2G High system with the Bose option?

When I select 'Manual' in the systems menu, it says the disc is missing - there is a Manual CD in the owners pack - where does this disc go? In one of the 6 slots in the glovebox? And should its stay there or does it install on the system and can then be removed?

I listen to a lot of music but all my CDs are in the loft - so I must have some kind of Aux In. It seems that there is no Aux In on the MMI system unless my car has the AMI option - which it doesn't. I'm not about to spend 500 quid on an all singing all dancing interface that fully integrates with the MMI, I'm not bothered about controlling my phone from the car controls, I just want a cable that I can plug into the phone. So, what is my best and cheapest option for fitting an Aux In? For example, will this work with my system: http://www.xcarlink.co.uk/product.php?productid=61 - Does anyone have experience of fitting / using this unit? Any other suggestions gratefully received.

Thanks in advance!

Adam

Hi Adam,

Welcome to the forum

The manual CD should go in position 1 of the 6 CD Changer. It's a bit slow when navigating from the MMI but useful.

I've no experience of the Xcarlink, but I hear nothing bad.

Scott, on this forum, has an AMI for sale. Link
AMI has better MMI system integration and simple to use with large USB stick.

Other than the above there was a 6 CD Changer that was MP3 file compatible.

Cheers Matt, much appreciated - Im not so bothered about the AMI, but will be messaging Scott about the DAB radio - that's next on the list after the Aux In!

If you have the TV tuner, then there is the ability to have 2 x inputs to the system (AV1 and AV2), I have a bluetooth receiver on mine connected to AV1 so I can stream all my music from my phone. Would work equally well fitting an aux in and routing it to either the centre console or the glovebox. Really easy install. For the bluetooth, it cost me £40. Controlled from the phone but you did say you were OK with that.

I used the x-carlink after I had fitted the AMI, but I only use it for an after market reversing camera that I fitted. It does have a lot of capabilities but I have a hybrid TV tuner and DAB radio so the x-carlink is a lot of overkill for the use I make of it.

As a D2 owner, that all sounds incomprehensible - but welcome anyway!

I've retrofitted the AMI to my D3 and its the best thing I ever did. I plugged in a 500GB self powered USB driver loaded with 320KBPS MP3 files and its fantastic.

I would do AMI over DAB, DAB in this country is over rated with poor bitrates and in some cases mono audio.

Mannyo,
I agree with your points
  1. AMI best thing ever, especially when on my own.
  2. DAB radio a big let down. The company 8 has DAB and it works all the way to Gatwick or Bristol OK, while mine is very hit and miss, sometimes worse than others on the same journey.
Big point to remember for new chaps is that the \\\usb drive needs to be formatted with Fat 32.

Interestingly my new little Volvo has DAB and it works superbly, even at my house (in a deep valley) where my mains DAB radio can't get a signal and FM is rather crap too! As for mobile reception, well.

PS Just discovered that the Volvo really does have an 8-speed auto box (model TG-81SC), apparently made by the Japanese firm Aisin.

Finally: gone, but not forgotten.....
1998 D2 PF S8. Agate Grey/Platinum. Every option (I think) except electric rear seats, Tiptronic steering wheel, ski hatch, towbar & dimming door mirrors.
e.g. Cruise control, NavPlus/TV, Bose, GSM, Xenons, Solar roof, Parking sensors, Alcantara/leather everywhere of course. (internal dimming mirror added later)

And before that a lot of Rover 800s, a few oddities, a lovely Triumph Dolomite 1850HL with Overdrive and way back in my schooldays an Austin Seven aka Mini 850!

AMI over DAB any day of the week.

But I hate the radio.

AMI is easier to install and you get your own music to listen to without worrying about DAB dropping signal.

Welcome
