Default D2 0r D3. The unspeakable truth

I'm a poor drone, and I'm lucky to own a FL S8.

I look at the newer D3 cars and feel not one twinge of envy.

Why?

Dems ugly!

That frog mouth grile thingy is the work of a certified loony!

My 'ol D2 is so much prettier!

Yeah, the D2 is a lot more exclusive. I had the choice of a D3 A8 or a D2 S8 and you can see which one I went for. Then again, don't knock it till you try it. The D3 will be on my list of cars when I lool to change, a 6.0 W12 along with an E39 M5/RS 6.

I have to agree with Simon

I had an impromptu A8 owners' meeting today in Oxford (sorry no pics), the other 2 were D3s (3.0 TDI and a 4.2QS), a very nice place to be, but for me you can't beat the classic lines and feel of the D2...

I like the D3 - doesn't look as dated as the D2 (which I also like, before the flames appear!)

Personally I don't think the D2 looks dated at all. As Clive said it's a very clean design and still holds its own today.

I was never fan of the D3 but it's really starting to grow on me now. The more I see, the more I like them. The only thing that puts me off is the reliability issues that some of the guys have had.

D2 all the way for me! although, I have to admit that the look of the D3 S8 is beginning to grow on me...

At least the D2 and D3 have basically the same silhouette, unlike the latest car (D4?) which I don't like at all - presumably it will grow on me.

Does anyone remember the way the Sierra 'jellymould' shape was universally disliked when it came out in the 80s? Nowadays most cars probably owe part of their styling to this!

I had a D3 A8 4litre V8 TDi. The car had less soul than a D2 but on it's side was a spec list you wouldn't believ and the most torque I have ever experienced in a road car - 0-60 just over 4sec, top speed of 184mph and average of 35mpg (upto 45 on a run). Mine had just a remap but was incredible!

I prefer the D2 for many reasons but when I am in a position to get another @8 I'll stryggle to choose between

For my two penneth, I love the D2..... Alway have, it was my first love and brought me to the Audi brand.

The D3 at first seemed ugly, and I resented its existence, but over the years it has matured and now I find it quite attractive, with an extensive list of toys and gadgetry that I would really like in a car, but sadly the older D3's seem to be suffering with this gadgetry malfunctioning, and unlike the D2 where an item breaks and most things carry on, the D3 is far too interlinked for simple DIY repairs for most people.... Mecanically they seem to go well, but the gadgets and quality of the interior trims dont seem to stand the test of time like the D2 did.

So yes, my D2 feels a bit older, and the shape looks a little more dated, but it still goes like the clappers, is having no problems with this snow and above all is both comfortable and reliable....

I cant see me looking to move my D2 on for some time.....

Default Well said Ian!

I've done no more than sit in a D3, but as much as I've tried to let it grow on me it just isn't happening - the classic look and feel of the D2 are where it is for me
