How many A8/S8's?

Just been having a trawl through the "Spotted on Tarmac" forum and it got me thinking that there doesn't seem to be a lot of A8/S8's out on the roads. I've only seen 3 others in the last 2 months, so they seem pretty rare out there!

Does anyone have a grasp on production numbers, quantities produced in LHD/RHD format?

I don't know if it's still possible but at one time you could request information from DVLA on the number of cars registered in the UK - has anyone ever enquired?
