Default possible cause?!?

Just to refresh, very occasionally when going up a lowered kerb the car makes a twangy clunk (which immediately on purchase resulted in anti roll bar bushes and links being swapped, but it made for no difference) that depending on speed <5mph sounds like its coming from the outside edge of the car and then on occasion from the middle.....

I think I may have found my random clunk noise....having had a crawl about under it, the gearbox mountings have a small amount of movement in them. I'm not sure what the normal amount of movement is but grabbing the back of the 'box i can get 3ish mm up and down.

they are not available from non gen sources so its dealer only, at about 100 sheets each. and its got 2 down there. but i don't mind dropping a 2 spot if the car car no longer clunks. Is this amount of play normal before i pay audi some hard earned, answers on a postcard!

Have you checked the front suspension for any play?
This is normally where most of the clunking noises come from.

The reason I'm asking is the front upper arm has gone on my car and it only clunks at low speed but there is play when you move the front wheel.

I'd be 100% sure and check the front suspension again before you shell out for the gearbox mountings.

it had just passed a MOT when i got it, its done it since then. I changed the anti roll bushes on the off chance but it still was the same. I have had a pull on the arms and moved the wheels with it jacked up and it didn't seem to have movement present. Thats why i want to know if anyone knows how much play should be in the 'box bushes, they were the only thing i could get moving with relatively little force.

The car is in for MOT today so I'll have a look at the gearbox mountings and see how much play there is.

I'll let you know later.

Had a quick look under the car and checked for play in the mountings.

There is no excess travel on the gearbox so you may be right B@fink it could be the 'box mountings.

I've never heard of the 'box mounts going before but I suppose it's possible. I could almost hang off the the back of the 'box and there was very little movement.
