Default Premium fuel

Hi, I've never been a user of the higher-priced premium fuel but am now a convert. I'll shorten a long story. Mrs Saff's MB B-class had issues with diesel knock and smoking exhaust. I always used Costco diesel for this and my own D4. Anyhow, a reputable engine guy, on hearing this knock suggested I try the pricier stuff. I was a bit sceptical but went ahead. The engine is quieter, more responsive and just nicer to drive. I'm not sure about fuel economy yet but I don't really care as the improvement is so incredible. I have now switched to this for my 4.2 tdi and whilst not as dramatic the engine seems quieter and throttle response definitely has improved. It's BP Advanced btw.
Just thought I'd share.
Steve.

There are many here (me included) who apply the same rule to petrol. Some even restrict themselves exclusively to Shell V-power. There's also the alcohol E5/E10 issue to debate.
Both our cars are fed regularly on 99RON petrol, usually Tesco Momentum which seems as good as Shell and is considerably cheaper. Better performance and fuel economy than on 95RON.

For Petrol BP I avoid as it's lower RON, 97 I think, not sure about Esso that may have changed since I last looked but it was maybe 98? Also BP is usually very expensive.

And before that a lot of Rover 800s, a few oddities, a lovely Triumph Dolomite 1850HL with Overdrive and way back in my schooldays an Austin Seven aka Mini 850!

I'm often late to the party but was so impressed with the improvement I thought I'd share. BP is my local filling station so my first choice. Cost is secondary (within reason) as the combined mileage of both cars is under 6K annually.
Thanks for your input.

I have found improvments in the past but not with the 2015 A8 3.0TDI, it seems to be the same on any diesel..

Also I remember Darkside Development (Tuner) did quite an extensive test and found them pretty much all the same on every measurement apart from price.

But if it works for you great, I'm glad it doesn't for me as regular diesel is already too expensive.

I've always used Tesco Momentum in Herman since I got him - which made MJ surmise, in his WITW thread, that this may have been a contributory factor in his engine being superclean

Mine LOVES the cheaper non-premium Shell.
I had no option but to fill up with the cheap stuff on a trip last week and the car has taken to it with enthsiasm, as measured by a noticable increase in fuel its consuming.

'Premium' as defined by a marketing person might be a tad to flexible to have a meaning that you can depend on

I seem to remember some while back that the fuel from Costco was the same as Tesco, not sure if that's still the case. I always try and use premium fuel and as above Momentum seems pretty decent stuff and cheaper than most of the others. Even Morrisons premium is 99 these days.

As others already mentioned, Tesco Momentum is 1st choice for both my D2 and the much later M5.

The missus' diesel gets whatever's convenient
