Rear windscreen demist - not working!

As the weather has set in cold and wet, I have noticed that my rear screen is not demisting all over. There appears to be an element in the glass of the whole thing, but i am only getting a strip about 6 inches wide that is demisting and it takes a long time.

Is there anything I should be checking, or do I need a replacement?
