Default Sweating

I don't sweat that much. My best mate does, he is that bad that he uses some form of magnesium gel that he puts under his arms. Weirdo, anyway....

The '8 is certianly making me worried. I started the week (Monday night) with £50 worth of normal unleaded in the tank - the computer read 5 miles and the gauge was on empty.

Computer says I'm getting 25mpg average, which is fine.

I parked the car up last night at it was well above the red bit. Started it up this morning and its well in the red - the fuel pump on the dash and I'm thinking im going mad.
Drove to work and about 10 minutes into the motorway journey the fuel pump light has gone out and the gauge has gone back to what I left it at the night before.

I then restart the car later to do a few miles in work and its gradually reading less and less and less within a few miles. Its then down to 5 miles and I'm sweating like a mental.

Just how far can you go?! and whats with the mickey mouse gauge?!

Do you park on incline?

Most I have done is around 30 miles with it showing 0 but it can vary between cars some run out before it goes to 0.

I always fill up full tank and it drops very slowly first , i can probably do 100 miles with it still showing full but at the end it drops very fast, it can go from 1/3rd of tank to empty in 50-60 miles but I can still drive when it shows empty and 0 on range meter.

I often park at home on an incline facing down hill. I can park with the tank showing just under a quarter and a range of 120 miles, but if I get in it the following day I'm greeted by the fuel light and a range of 5 miles!
Has to be the sender in the tank. The odd thing is it doesn't seem to rectify itself until some fuel's been added. Put in 30 litres and the fuel level's showing half a tank. Had me really worried too to start with - could decide if someone had syphoned it or if I had leak.

Incline will affect fuel level readigs.

My 1997 S8 don't have this issue but 1994 and 1995 C4 A6's that I had did not rectify themself unless I put a fair amount of fuel in it, at least half tank. I hope this helps.

Also when i get new car i ran it empty until it runs out of fuel with a can in boot so that i know how far i can go, not on diesels though as i do not fancy bleeding it on roadsidde
