Default Bumpy ride on final editions with 15 mm spacers

I put final editions on to my a8 with 15 mm spacers....and for some reason I would get vibration through the steering wheel at about 80 to 90 mph usually when cruising...but not when accelerating.

Further when I slowed down...for some reason I would feel significant brake judder at about the 40mph mark...but I wouldnt feel the judder in the brake pedal...but it would feel like the transmission was moving side to side....

Anyhow I figured I would switch back to the a8 sports to see if the symptoms would persist or cease. I was getting the similar symptoms but to far lesser extent.

At present with a8 sports...I am feeling all the bumps through the steering wheel....the steering wheel has slight vibration at speeds...80- to 90,,,and there is some slight judder when slowing down....

Could anyone advise why I would be experiencing these symptoms....especially so on bigger wheels with spacers....

thanks

Sounds like you need to remove the spacers and try again with the 20s and see if it's still there - if not there's an issue with either the spacer design or fitting....

vibrations could be -
  • wheels
  • tyres
  • spacers
  • suspension bushes
  • brake disks warped
  • tracking / alignment

I would start with the cheapest/easiest to deal with and work your way through. Spacers, tracking, balancing and wheel alignment have got to be favourite along with checking your tyres followed by brakes and finally suspension bushes. How old are each of those parts Ranj?

Everything on your list he's done within the past year Neil. I don't know how the transmission can feel like its moving from side to side either, just ignore it and carry on with the final editions.

Never experienced an A8 on 18s to compare it with, by my S8 does NOT have a soft ride...

Tracking out shouldn't really make any vibration.

Sounds like wheel wobble at 70 - 80 mark. When were the finals last balanced? i would say that would be my first point of call, also while they're on the machine have a look at the wheel might be slightly buckled. Put the 2 worst ones on the back.

If brake discs are warped you'd only feel it when braking, mine were really bad at 60mph and getting less violent as the speed decreased at 30 you could hardly notice it. I reckon that would be to do with the frequency i.e. how much they're warped and the speed the warped part is passing through the caliper.

Really? i'm supprised by that as the side wall on a 20 is tiny compared to a 18 so the 18 there for soaking up more of the bumps.

My 21" Kahn wheels actually felt better to drive than the 19" low profiles on my last A4 which felt like go kart suspension, hard and uncomfortable.
A lot of it has to do with the type of seats and even the make of tyre too I feel. having said all that the 20" final editions are more comfortable on my 8 than the 21" Kahn wheels but neither can be said to be comfy lol I guess ive just got used to the ride now!

If the spacers were fitted at the same time as the 20s I'd still be pointing the finger at them first. Especially if they weren't removed when going back to 18s
