Default The art of Wheel Alignment

Last week I had the alignment done on a 4WA rig, the alignment was out and I knew it was at the time. No printout available as the printer was broken, but it looked ok on the screen.

Today I had all 4 tyres replaced, at a different place as my usual one did not have the required tyres sizes in stock. They also offered to check the alignment for free, so when I went to pickup the car they also said the alignment is out, and provided me with a printout.

To fix this they would like to have the car for a whole day, as due to the complexity of the suspension they want time to get it right, and also mentioned that if one of the track rod ends has seized it/they may need to be replaced, even though they know it was adjusted fine last week.

I have attached the printout to this post, thoughts appreciated. The car drives fine, or seems to at least.

I would go back to first garage and see what they have to say? Free recheck with their equipment maybe. If theirs are still reading OK then maybe ask both garages when were their equipment last checked/calibrated assuming they do need calibration.

Greetings gentlemen. Tracking expertise also sought by me. After some recent suspension arm work locally they took the car to the next town for tracking. I asked them to do all four wheels. This is what I got back - the car feels OK, but the figures mean little to me. I guess the PARA[lellisme] for Avant and Arriere are OK, but what's the rest?

Well looking at Manno's printout i would say it's not that far out and within tolerance (nearly) the NSR is a little way out but not a lot. Could be awkward to adjust that one too if it's siezed. But if you don't have tyre wear on the outside of that tyre i wouldn't worry too much about it.

It should be showing +10' + or - 2' on the front i think. So NS wants to toe in and OS wants to toe out a bit to be spot on. To that print out.

The max allowable difference between the 2 sides is 30' on that print out you are 26' out (seen in the centre where it says total toe)

It might no be possibe to get it spot on, on all 4 corners but well worth either getting a print out from the first people that done it, to compare the two.

Chris, i can't see your print out that well and also seems to be written in some sort or strange language.

Hi,

For years I have always done my own wheel alignment using the old rally fishing line and axle stands trick. Being very careful with the setup and using a fine scale steel ruler will get it pretty close to a laser setup.

I've got a picture somewhere of an Impreza WRC being aligned in excatly the same way at a WRC meeting. OK so their equipment is a little nicer than mine but basically the same method.

I've always like to have a play with alignement setting as the OEM specs are really for predictable understeer with low tyre wear. This may be fine for most but if you really want the car to handle, for your style of driving, then a little playing is required. If you really want to play you can set it up on track by taking tyre temperatures across the face. This may be taking things a little too far for most!

On my previous cars, Celica GT-Fours, the std alignment was much like the 8 slight toe at front and rear. The setup I stayed with was 0 toe at the front and 2mm out rear, for summer, and 1mm toe in for winter.

Totally different car to std. Predictable understeer turned into good turn-in with a tendancy to oversteer when pushed. Ideal for corner carving.

On the topic, who is going to tell me the front/rear track widths of an 02 A8QS???

John

Think it's 1591mm Front and 1581 Rear

I've just been on a run from Blandford to Poole Audi and back, and I must say that the new tyres have made a world of difference, not to sure the wheels have been balanced well however.
