Default Don't overcomplicate the task in hand

My daughter's A6 has been running with the oil level/temperature sensor on for a while now, something she seems to have got used to and doesn't notice it.
She left her car at my house for a couple of days as she is away to London, so I decided to give it a service and investigate the fault.

There were 2 faults that kept popping up

29-00 - Short to Ground

I decided to Google and see what the problem could be after speaking with a mechanic and being told it was possibly a broken wire.
Google came up with several answers and one was the bonnet microswitch, so I stripped it out and checked it was working properly and it was. More Googling where broken wires and water ingress seemed to be the most common fault and there were a few who had changed the sensor only to still have the problem. Onto Ebay and I found a new non OE sensor for £9.99 plus postage, TPS were quoting £65.50 plus VAT for the genuine Hella part. I decided that the £9.99 sensor could be either a bargain or it could be more bother than it's worth and went to TPS and bought the real deal. I drained the oil and changed the sensor, new filter and oil and started it up and low and behold the light was out. Another scan with Vag-Com to delete the faults and both are now clear.

I wonder how many with the same problem bought the cheap sensor only for the fault to remain or come back after a week or two
