Has anyone driven an a5 tdi
Well I need a diesel and so the s8 going but what do I replace it with...????
Not sure what to go for??? I want Quattro as it is good for rainy journeys and thinking possibly a5 but not sure.. Has anyone driven the a5 quattros???? and are there any potential problems to look out for with the 3.0 diesel engines???? I heard the 2.0tdi engines aren't that good...is that true or is it just a rumour????

I've looked at this time and time again....
I sat in an S5 for the first time yesterday and it felt incredibly cramped in there. Theres more room in the A1, and I'm not joking..... I had fancied one 'at some point' - until I sat in it ! A6 le mans 3.0 Tdi quattro manual would shift, has reasonable spec and you'd get over that annoying 'automatic + turbolag' problem where you cant set off quickly from juctions.... A4 3.0 Tdi quattro would be a hoot, but high spec ones fetch top money. The new A6 Bi-Tdi looks amazing. 0-60 in 4.9 seconds. Yes. < 5 seconds for a diesel, with a combined of 44mpg. Stunning. Brand spanking new and not even in the country yet apparently, so not cheap... Doh. Depends on your budget etc etc etc. I've recently had a diesel. It was frugal, and cheaper to run. But they always always *sound* like a diesel. Yes, they're way more refined now, but you can always just hear the dull engine note in the cabin..... So for now, I'll be sticking to the good stuff......

  That's just the performance/Eco figures. Don't even get me started on how dull and boring the A5 will be to drive vs the BMW. When you're driving a diesel, you need something that will make up for the lack of a petrol V8 in other ways, the Beemer does this in the way they handle. The only thing the A5 has going for it is quattro, that's it. All IMO.

All I'd add to that is don't expect to match the government fuel econonmy figures.
My dad has a C350CDI Estate Auto, which should be getting around 42mpg if you believe the figures, in reality it's averaging around 33mpg. What is noticeable that on a short run, maybe the first 10 miles, the economy is really poor, so if you are doing any short trips, the economy will really suffer. Even on our trip to S.France back in May, i.e. a LONG run, I only managed to average around 37mpg, speeds from about 60 - 85mph. Admittedly this was fully laden with 4 adults and luggage on board, but even empty, I doubt we'd have matched the claimed economy. In a nutshell, the most modern cars have their programs set up to minimise CO2 emissions on a robotised test, with no lights, AC etc etc. Real worlds figures will be a lot lot different, and probably not much between the BMW, Mercs and Audi, they'll probably all do around 35-37 mpg, maybe a little less for the Audi because of the extra drivetrain drag. Final point, though he thinks it's a great car, he is probably already decided that it will be replaced with a petrol version of whatever he chooses next.

The Beemer has a perfectly good quality interior, not any better or any worse than an A5. Nice interiors and four wheel drive have always been the Audi owners war cry, no wonder BMW drivers think we're such a bunch of sissies.

Four wheel drive
I do believe the BMW drives better...but for commuting up and down the motorway and on country lanes in the rain/snow nothing feels sure footed like quattro...especially cos i ll be looking at something with a bit of poke....the 335 was great to drive but when it rained it poor to say the least and when I got stuck in snow was an absolute nightmare...so until BMW do four wheel drive saloon I m happy with Audi...

...or Audi learn how to make a car drive properly. They've done it with the B7 RS4 and R8. But have gone backwards since. B7 and R8 must have been by accident. Watch the RS5 vs M3 review on Top Gear. Shocking how badly it under steered.
