Default Oil leak assistance.

Hello !

I took my Facelift (1999b) A8 2.8 3.0V to a DIY workshop to do a oilchange the other day and when removing the cowl beneath the engine I noticed I had some drips of oil hanging on the right side of the engine block, (seen from the drivers seat)

I could not see where it came from, but I wiped it off best I could and I´m going to take another look in a week and see how bad it is. Are there any usual suspect around that area ? Looked like it was directly below the CV.

Also.. when the previous owner replaced the filter ( or workshop).. they must have forgotten to oil the lip on the oilfilter.. cause I broke two filter removers and had to hack an saw the rest of the filter off... *yay*

Oil leak from down there could well be output seal and yes is well documented on here. Mine has been wet now for probably 3 years.

New filter only needs to be nipped up hand tight, i have struggled to undo a filter i've put on before they do get tight.

Yea, I was searching for something like that..
Mine is a v6 FWD tho, and most guides I´ve been able to see are 4.2 Quattros.
But maybe the procedure is similar ?

I´m going on a 800 Mile roundtrip over Christmas so I hope it´ll be fine for a couple of more miles..

I found a pic on the blauparts forum

The oily bits are the thing with ribs on the top right corner, but looks like it origins somewhere above it.

The 4.2's have a filter cartridge in a housing so you don't get the same issue of the filter canister ripping, that said the housings can get tight. You can drive something like an old screwdriver through the canister type and use it like a t bar, but if it was that tight then probably just make a mess.

If it is crankshaft seals then its engine oil that’s leaking out, so should see a loss on the dipstick, if not then it’s likely to be output shaft seals. However it’s surprising how little oil can make it look a lot worse than it is. So you might not be able to tell from the dip. A good clean down and keep an eye on it might be best.
