Nokian's seem to do well in winter tests, not surprising really, though they don't show up in this list much:

http://www.tyrereviews.co.uk/Tyre-Tests/#winter

which is like a "best of" tests over a number of years, and seems to have only four makes/variants: Nokian, Conti WinterContact, Dunlop and Michelin Alpins.

I'm sticking with Alpin 3s/4s for this winter, partly because I don't want to change from Michelins, but I have asked the guys at DM Tyres if they're getting any Dunlops or Conti Winters. Either of these with 6/7mm tread are worth £40 a pop part-worn, IMHO...

nokian [ formerly nokia ] specialise in this field for obvious reasons

for many years both saab and volvo purchased their tyres as original equipment , don't know the present position following change of ownership ; but both companies were highly selective in what they fitted , and tested extensively ...price was not their first consideration unlike so many others

~I have their all season tyres on my old 90 quattro 20v , and they are a superb fitment ..that stays at home while I go to warmer climes ; having said that my daughter has conti winter contact for her new A6 , and is very pleased with them

I have tried the most of tires on winter roads and Frozen lakes and always end up with Yokohama Iceguard as the best studfree tire.

Just recently Purchased a set of 235/50/18 IG50 for the 8
