When I took the transmission tunnel trim panels off my D2 recently (drains!) I found some chunky foam padding behind the drivers side one.
It was fairly high up, almost alongside the RNS, and to put it mildly, doesn't look very OEM. No part numbers. ![]() I have absolutely no idea why it was used, unless there was some sort of vibration or annoying rattle - there certainly isn't with the panels off. ![]() I did find some odd remnants of cabling, tape on the wiring looms and some small marks that suggest a handsfree phone kit was installed and later removed so maybe it was related to that? For your delight (and critique) here's a picture of it:

Added Auto-dim mirror, Leather seats, Trip computer, Cruise control, OEM Ford SatNav with CD changer. And before that a lot of Rover 800s, a few oddities, a lovely Triumph Dolomite 1850HL with Overdrive and way back in my schooldays an Austin Seven aka Mini 850!
