You're right, it was talked about a while ago. I even went so far as to see what 3D printers could do. I think the main issue would be getting 3D scans of the grilles, and then getting one of the many 3D hubs around the country that can produce items of that size. And since the grilles are to be visible, you'd have to go with the finest printing. Looking at the prices on some of the 3D hubs, they range from quite cheap to 'bloody hell'.

e.g. Maplin sell a 3D printer for £375, but is limited to a maximum size of 200 x 200 x 200mm, and I think the grilles are longer than that.
