Silly me. The group of modules (Address 07 / 0E / 0F / 1E / 37 / 47 / 56 / 57 / 5E) are all related and the MMI controls are part of all that. There is an optical diagnostic test you can run in VCDS to see if you can identify what may be causing the issue here. They all run on a fibre optic bus, so if there is a fault in any one part, the entire system doesn't work. You can buy fibre optic bridge loops which allow you to bypass a particular module, as a way of testing if that particular module is faulty or not.

If you need a fibre optic bridge loop, you can buy cheap ones from the likes of eBay for around a fiver, as the OEM ones are around £40. Here's a link to one such example:
