From the work I've done on the car, I would say a definite yes, but I do recall seeing a post somewhere where they said they could do it without removing it, by just prising it forward, which I reckon would be very tight and need multiple hands.
If you look at image 688, I've highlighted where the thermostat is, behind that metal pipework. Image 423 shows what's in front of 688, and image 680 shows what's in front of 423. Take into account that I also had the entire front end off the car, but I needed to do that. This is a 3.7 engine, but the 4.2 has a very similar layout.
