RNS-D - won't unlock using its Security Code

If your car came with the basic text nav, then it (the basic text nav) can talk to the DIS directly. My D2 also already had nav and required the wiring changes with TMC. The RNS-D is a whole new ball game and requires the wiring changes regardless of having nav before.

Manny, another question on the TMC module. You mentioned in another thread on your RNS-D retrofit about having to add a TMC module. I've Googled the TMC module and it appears to be behind the instrument cluster. If I pull out my instrument cluster and the module is there, can I assume that it is already correctly wired into the cluster (seems sensible if the part is there)?

Now that it has finally stopped raining, I'll check the coding on the unit to see if it matches what mik15 states, and also use the PDF that HPsauce provided. Assuming everything is correct, would that confirm my faulty instrument cluster? Is there any way to check the TMC module?

Yes, that's the one. The RNS-D will require the TMC Gateway module as already suggested. From memory, the Gateway is addressable from Vagcom, but unless you had a factory RNS-D I see no reason for it to be there.

The RNS-C is a very similar unit that should talk direct to the cluster, but maps stop at 2007 amongst other drawbacks.

Also note that even with a TMC Gateway I never got a Full Screen Nav to talk to the DIS on an early facelift car, i.e. prior to the RNS-D being available from late 2000... It could have just been a coding issue, but I recall trying quite exhaustively and giving up...

Unless you have a desperate need for OEM look and turn by turn directions in the DIS, I'd always suggest looking at an RNS-E unit in preference as its far, far superior and it doesn't require the TMC to get Radio/Cd/MP3 info on the DIS upper lines...

Well, I can confirm that I have a TMC module in the car. I need to cut some cable ties to pull the instrument cluster further forward, but was able to see the module and a few cables connected to it.

So far as coding is concerned, I wasn't 100% sure which module it was under, so checked a few. Under Radio (56), I went to coding and it had 00205. I don't have BOSE or a telephone.

Yes, note the twin coax cables coming out of the TMC Gateway. In earlier cars, the phone module used to live in that place and it will look quite similar....
