When I change the rear breathers I will check all other vacuum/ breather pipes back there as well, especially any attached to the Idle valve or throttle body.
Hope I find the cause because SWMBO is fed up with it stalling in traffic jams has suggested its time for it to go. Any other suggestions to check greatly received as I do not want to sell it, even though its done over 170,000 miles

Well I changed the rear breather pipes, which both had small holes in them. The small breather pipe to the throttle body was also blocked, so changed that as well. Checked all other breather/vacuum pipes which all seemed okay. Reset the idle valve using VCDS. Unfortunately this has made no difference. In fact, if anything it has made the stalling worse. Will try replacing the idle valve again from our sponsors to see it this helps, once the one they have appears in the sale. £60 is to dear. Last one I bought was in the sale at £30
If this does not work I don't know where to turn next. Anymore suggestions guys or any recommendations as to where I can take it to someone who can sort this problem once and for all

I had issues like this some time ago. One suggestion to stop it stalling was to switch the A/C Econ off. Mine was related to the vacuum pipes. The front ones were easy to see and replace, but it was the ones at the back of the engine that were the issue. On one side of the engine, the pipe was starting to perish and on the other side, the pipe had disappeared completely. There was a gap of about two inches to where it should have connected to the one way check valve.
There is a set of instructions (with pictures) on the audipages site: http://www.audipages.com/Tech_Articl...sereplace.html

Both of those links are for FL, OP's car is PF so vacuum hoses are a bit different. But symptoms does sound like incorrect reading for measured air either because of bad/dirty MAF or air/vacuum leak.
