Default Engine stall……

Morning everyone,
Came up to Scotland for a quick pre Christmas trip and car seemed to get here relatively problem free…..
Had one glitch at Lancaster services when I was entering services and the engine stalled when I was super slow into car park behind another vehicle…
Anyway after that stop it was fault free and I was amazed at how little fuel it seemed to be sipping (approx 300miles half a tank)
So this morning car didn’t seem to be idling too great and every so often even while driving along it just doesn’t feel right with idle dropping a little and a few moments when stopping at junction where it wanted to stall again.
Any ideas what this could be. I’m a bit loathe to be driving the car now until I can have someone look at it and especially so before I try attempt drive home (circa 400 miles)

Meant to add - no dash warnings other than the battery light as it tries to stall, and I’ve no vcds to plug in and try.

Sounds like a vacuum leak. The usual candidates on a 32V are either the crankcase breather hoses which perish and collapse, or part of the brake vacuum assembly on the left side of the throttle body - item 24 in the pic tends to split where it joins the throttle body.

The breather hoses can be replaced by standard oil-resistant hose, which doesn't look great but is functional. #24 can be temporarily repaired using self-amalgamating tape. I'm contemplating a small production run of these next year as I need a couple myself.

The other usual candidate for poor running is the coil amplifiers which live under the trim panel behind the air filter box. Scan it with VCDS and see if it has any misfire codes.

Do you have the air-con ECON button on? If so, try switching it off and see if that has any effect at slow speeds or at junctions.

Thanks for the quick replies - no exon button on for the air con.
I was mid drive to Edinburgh /60mile trip when I was noticing it so I kept committed and have done the run and it seems to have sorted itself out again……
Going to try get it into a local mechanic tomorrow/Friday and see what they can suss out. @mikkiejayne would your suggestions be a sudden thing as this was very very sudden as had been driving perfectly sweetly up to now….

So just a quick update on this, after a few hours break in Edinburgh at a large Swedish store, the car drove home to my parents impeccably with a number of stops enroute for additional shopping and dinner, and with no fuss whatsoever!!
Question is then can something like what’s been suggested be totally intermittent and random in its presenting

Very odd. Breather hoses and coil amps tend to be working or broken rather than intermittent. It suggests the cause may be electrical instead - wiring, maybe the throttle body.

Do you have VCDS yet? It might have recorded something in the ECU.

Where abouts in the Midlands are you? I have VCDS and would be happy to run a scan if you happen to be in this area.

I do have vcds, just didn’t think I’d need it on holiday…. Either need someone near Dundee or wait until I get home
