Strange electrical issues

Hi all, I had a strange electrical surge/short the other day which created a tonne of error codes but they cleared straight away and it hasn't come back.

So, I was driving to Manchester with a friend to pickup a car for him, it's about a 2 hour drive for me it's probably the longest continuous drive I've done in the S8 since I bought it. Car drove flawless the entire way. We got about 30 seconds from our destination and suddenly the car jerked/jumped and all the dash electrics went off. Everything suddenly lit back up and I had a red "Brakes!" warning message that went away as soon as it appeared. I turned the engine off, waited a few seconds and started it again, no warning lights or nothing so we drove down the road to our destination.

Whilst my friend was viewing this other car I used my carista (I have VCDS I just need to buy a new laptop) to scan the codes and it displayed the attached. I cleared the codes and almost everything has disappeared and not come back, the only stuff that has returned are the items I am aware off such as the wiper motor control and tweeter motors.

Please post a full unedited VCDS scan. You've cut so much information it's impossible to make any suggestions.

In addition to what Matt said, can you provide the full scans of before and after. You can add the full scan using the CODE option, which will add the full scan details within a scrollable region within your post, to keep it neater. When you're replying, click on the # symbol on the second line of icons above the reply field. That will insert the text CODE surrounded by square brackets followed by /CODE surrounded by square brackets, with the cursor between them. Just paste your scan in there.

Thanks all, my repaired laptop should be arriving tomorrow afternoon, will post VCDS scan here tomorrow night/Sunday.

However the car hasn't done anything similar nor has it had any further electrical issues (aside from Auto Wipers, It looks like the gel pad needs replacing).

Address 05: 00191 - Typical issue with the door handles as they fail over time. I've seen it mentioned elsewhere to just disconnect the cable going to the door handle for the sensor, but never tried it.

Address 08: 00065 & 00066 - Another typical issue that affects older cars. The footwell heaters basically consist of a large heatsink with four transistors bolted to them. All held in with some sort of epoxy, so you can't get at them without destroying them. Most people just live without them.

Address 08: 00604 - One of the flap motors has an intermittent fault. Since you now have VCDS, you can go into Address 08 and run tests on them. It's been a while, but I think you can run Basic Settings for individual motors, and the issue might be that the motor is failing or that it is out of the allowable range. Worth checking and running that before replacing. The following PDF has instructions of how to replace. Just search for G113:

Address 09: 00908, 01520 & 02071 - Did some Googling on this and came across the following thread. Problem was with a Q7, but the same error codes as yours. Some more details can be found in SSP287. It's worth going through the entire thread to check things with VCDS, but their solution was replacing the J519 module (which has component protection), possibly caused by the car being jump started:

Address 34: 01400 - Could be a bad level sensor or a faulty connection to it. It might even be detached. Check them first and then use VCDS to check the measuring blocks. Change the settings in the MMI and see if VCDS shows corresponding/matching changes.

Address 37: 02288 - Weirdly, the VCDS Wiki doesn't even give details for this error code. Some searching did find the following thread, with the only common feature being that is was a Japanese import, although their issue was with coding the radio to work in Ireland:

Address 38: 00211 - Another one that shows nothing in the VCDS Wiki, with the only 00211 being a coding reference. From the description, maybe just a faulty connection in one of the rear roof lights or switches.

Address 46: 01134 - Yet another common faults with most VAG vehicles. The battery inside the alarm horn deteriorates and causes a short on the PCB, or destroys it completely.

Address 46: 02107 - The motor may just be stuck. Those with the plastic casing tended to be less up to the job and would sometimes struggle. One solution would be to try dismantling and applying violin rosin on the clutch wheel. The newer ones with a metal casing are better as they have a stronger motor.

This has taken longer to respond to than I expected, so I'll continue tomorrow.

One comment about the scan. You don't mention if any of these error codes are showing any visible signs like warning lights on dash or items not working e.g. for 'Address 09: 00908, 01520 & 02071' do the wipers work?

There are absolutely no warning lights on the dash, the wipers are intermittent, if I unplug the connection to the wiper motor and plug it back in, they work fine until it rains.

Same for the footwell heaters, seems strange as they appear to work fine.

The radio/nav errors I am fine with as it's a Jap car it doesn't work anyway, I use a bluetooth/radio transceiver to listen to music, I'm currently looking at alternative options.

My main worry was the battery issue I had after a long drive, It hasn't replicated itself at all, but the furthest I have driven was Leeds since then. Overall I still love the car, I have valve cover gaskets and plugs arriving this weekend, I'll tackle that job as I can tell the original is very brittle and oil is leaking into the spark plug wells from the gasket.

Sorry for the delay, but helping other family members with jobs the last few days.

Address 47: 03017 & 03016 - Do the tweeters work, and/or are they permanently up/down in the dash? If they don't move, either the motors have failed on both of them or someone disconnected them to stop they raising/lowering.

Address 47: 03000 - Would check the physical connections to the amplifier. Does the amp work? Maybe this issue is the cause of the tweeter codes.

Address 53: 01487 - Try clearing all three codes and then running the following test: http://wiki.ross-tech.com/wiki/index..._Function_Test

Address 53: 02443 - Two possible causes that I've come across. One is the EPB button is faulty, or has dirty contacts inside, the second being possible dodgy connections on the EPB module itself. Worth removing them and checking for signs of corrosion.

Address 53: 02596 - Two possible cases, the first being the obvious ones that the pads are worn. The second is that the pad thickness adaptation wasn't done properly the last time, in which case, you could try doing that. Address 56: 00856 - Might possible be due to corrosion at the base of the shark fin antenna on the roof.

Address 61: 02256 - This basically means that something isn't going to sleep properly. The big issue is figuring what. From the other codes, I'd hazard a guess that it's been caused by the door handle.

Following on from your last response, I can only assume that the wiper motor has a faulty connection somewhere, as they reset themselves when you disconnect them. Do they stop working when it starts raining? Very odd.
