Ok thanks all. I was actually about to ask about part numbers so you pre-empted that!
I thought I might also contact some auto locksmiths maybe they might be able to help....
I'm willing to travel but being based in Hastings NI is a bit too far! ;-)

Oh I SEE! I had just presumed that the car would need to be present. Well, that sounds like good news, I'll get in touch with them on Monday. Will be sure to give you an update :-)

I was wondering if this was a possibility, so long as you have other transport available while the 8 is off the road. Should then just be a matter of clearly indicating the original cluster and the donor cluster.

I handed them my original cluster and a standard fl cluster bought off Sean.
Original plan was simply to swap dis over as mine was pixellated badly
However it was cheaper to move info and clock faces etc. between units.

I contacted Greenaway and they could do this (estimate £80-£100) with me posting the two clusters to them. However, in the meantime I have found someone local to me in Sussex - recommended independently by both an Audi specialist and an auto electrician - for £90, and they can come to me :-)
I've taken out the existing cluster, got the part number and have found an identical cluster on eBay for £50, which should arrive on Wednesday.
So....hopefully, with a fair wind this will be sorted in the next week or so. Will let you know if all goes to plan!

I used a local auto locksmith to program mine.
He was able to pull the PIN from the cluster using a cheap chinese scan tool. Don't know the brand.
I've heard (but not tested) that VAGTacho or VAGComnander can pull the code too.

Once you have the PIN, VCDS can program the keys. I think it can change mileage too.

There's a write-up on another forum about how to do it, but I'm not sure about linking to it here (who's an admin - IT?).

Vag Tacho and Vag Commander can only get PIN for white immo box on D2's up to 1996, Super VAG which I have will also do black immo box 1997-1998. When I was looking couple of years ago for a tool the cheapest that will do later D2's was around £1000, I don't remember name but I think it started with 'A. Many of cheap tools including Vag Tacho and Vag Commander will work on later cars but there are very few tools that work on petrol 1999-2002 D2's. It is possible that there are other or updated cheap tools now that will work as it was couple of years ago when I looked in to it.

I just had a read of the procedure I referred to in my previous post.

It is mainly concerned with pulling the dash PIN (SKC), using a tool that can dump the immo3 EPROM data, then interpreting what you've extracted.
The tool referred to is "ArgDub's me7 95040 eeprom tool v1.31"
It can be a bit tricky to use, as it's a command line tool and doesn't have a GUI. Basic instructions are given.
If anybody wants a link or print out, let me know (I've saved it to my Dropbox).

The actual key programming is done via the Ross-Tech wiki procedure.
