Well, I doff my cap to you MJ for the immaculate write-up, the attention to detail, and the quality photo accompaniments to this thread. I get the overriding impression that there's always a fix for whatever comes your way.
With respect to the amp, I remember that Phoenix Gold one very well from back in the day - it was THE reference amp to have. Infiniti Kappa subs were experienced in a show BMW when I attended the IASCA finals in Dallas. All great quality stuff there and a very neat install. I'm in the same boat as Richy/Ricky D insofar as my old A8 had the ski hatch but my newer A8L doesn't. Thanks Andrew (HPsauce) for the link in this thread, which I will read with interest. Like many others on this thread, I look forward to the day when I can get booked in for some MJ fettling although I suspect that won't be any time soon - you've set a massively high standard with the quality of your work and we can all see that from the photos/mini storyline. I will continue to watch this thread although I know that all good things come to an end eventually.

MJ I really enjoy the quality of your work and the quality of your posts. It is gratifying to see you bring one of these lovely machines back to a fine state. And your brilliant efforts in recording and describing are icing on the cake. Thank you.

So it is. There's comfort in that also in regards to future mysteries.

Thanks guys
Mending trim tonight. Started with the handbrake cover - as usual the stupid plastic doodad had broken off. This is another fine candidate for some re-engineering when I have more time, but in this case I'm going to repair it with a donor piece. Drill the heads off the rivets. Very gently, separate the wood panel (actually wood laminated on to aluminium) from the plastic. They're held in place by a dab of glue and some double sided tape, then the rivets are staked down. I took the donor piece off a good walnut trim in the same fashion. I'll use the walnut piece for a re-engineering experiment later. Prepare the good plastic piece with some new tape Stuck together and clamped in place for the glue to set Mended As usual, the mounting tab on the driver's side tunnel trim was broken. However, this being left hand drive I had no frame of reference to locate the tab so this one was slightly more challenging to repair. I had to assemble and disassemble it half a dozen times to get everything right. Marked the level of the dash trim and the location of the bolt hole on some masking tape Made a new bracket Glued in place and clamped while the glue sets To locate the hole for the bolt I reassembled it all and marked it through the hole in the dash trim Drilled and snap nut installed Right hand drive on the left, and left hand drive on the right for comparison Installed back in the car Dash back together |

Its a bizarre design but that is how they come from the factory. The bulge appears to be the stop for the rubber as opposed to the 'not popping out' arrangement you'd typically see on a hose. The metal clips should hold them in place so they can't move under pressure. The right angle piece where the flexible hose joins on to the scuttle has a cable tie round it to hold it to the plastic pipe, but that's the only one that does.

That was popping off on mine recently so I fitted a new tighter one. All OK now, but it might all be coming off later today for the first "test fit" of my fan jets.
