there's a lighter mark on the edge of the belt that comes round every second or so. That seems 100% synchronised with the lateral movement of the belt on the pulley.
So, my conclusion is that the belt isn't quite straight and that's causing the lateral movement. Manufacturing defect?

1. Totally forgot to update it. No squeak at all.
2. Having spoken with BrianB (donp38) at the annual meet, I checked and subsequently replaced the alternator as the rear bearing were shot. The squeak went away, so I assumed that was the cause at the time.
3. Never even noticed that. Went and checked and that is wear on the belt, either from rubbing on the bottom plastic cover or the side of the metal pulley.
4. Michaela mentioned that it could be the belt itself, but until I strip it down 'again', I won't know for sure.
