Well all that I've proved is that I have two faulty alarm sirens with different electrical problems!
I've tried both units, with and without batteries and with both speakers in turn.

The original talks happily to the car and enjoys new batteries when fitted, but won't drive either speaker (they have the same connection).
The later one loses communication with the car triggering the alarm. It works with either speaker. Without batteries it still sounds but throws battery voltage errors of course.

So if anyone coming to the meet in June happens to have an old spare alarm siren kicking around I'll happily relieve you of it and see what I find inside.

Well I've taken a punt on an Original 8L0 951 605 I found on eBay (commercial breaker, not our sponsor!) and made a cheeky offer that was accepted on the basis that it will work but the batteries will need replacing.

If it actually works I will indeed replace the batteries, if not it will go back for a refund.

And on a related note I've bought a nearside dimming mirror glass from "Spanker".

Well it didn't work at all - No Communication according to VCDS.
To be fair, the seller refunded immediately, didn't ask for it to be returned (extra pointless cost I guess).
So I cut it open to see what I would find, though I could guess! Yuck!



Found an 8L0 951 605A going cheap so might try that.

That's nothing like as rotted as the one I received - lots of the smaller components had just disappeared, corroded away!

Meanwhile I've put back the original 8L0 951 605, with good batteries, to see what happens. No errors thrown up but equally no sounds either. Waiting for the next genuine but old 8L0 951 605A to arrive.

Well you win some and you lose some and this one was a WIN!
Arrived just now. Looked rather tired and dusty when I opened the package and had the wrong retaining bolt/nut (for an 8) which I removed and replaced.
But I plugged it in and locked the car - very satisfying loud chirp.

Loaded up VCDS and cleared all codes, locked and unlocked the car a few times, all sounding good. Still no errors, not even a low voltage warning! Even got a totally clean VCDS scan for once (that won't last though, various niggles return regularly).

So far so good, later in the summer I'll probably open it up anyway and put fresh batteries in it, or even wire in an external pack. Future-proofing with a separate battery pack is probably both easier and more reliable.
