Default fitting double din inplace of single

just picked up a double din surround and looking to fit my double din aftermarket head unit.
I have read the diy using the single din cage but I am worried making a mess of it and wasting my nice immaculate dash.
Is it easy to do and does it all sit nice ?

Although you do have quite a bit of black stuff around the new screen, I would be inclined to try and find some black plastic that matched the black of the climate control until below it. I think it would look better than surrounding it with a walnut colour, and more in keeping with the original. Rough idea of what both colours would look like.

That's a very neat job, and yes I agree with steamship - definitely try to match the black plastic below, not the wood effect.

Finally: gone, but not forgotten.....
1998 D2 PF S8. Agate Grey/Platinum. Every option (I think) except electric rear seats, Tiptronic steering wheel, ski hatch, towbar & dimming door mirrors.
e.g. Cruise control, NavPlus/TV, Bose, GSM, Xenons, Solar roof, Parking sensors, Alcantara/leather everywhere of course. (internal dimming mirror added later)

And before that a lot of Rover 800s, a few oddities, a lovely Triumph Dolomite 1850HL with Overdrive and way back in my schooldays an Austin Seven aka Mini 850!

will either find a trim sheet in black or even spray paint it?
I know if I was to use dash shine spray it would change the facia colour to match the blower controls but the surround isn't a flat plastic and might need sanded before anything down to that.
