I was contacted by someone with a 2014 Range Rover Evoque who'd taken their car to a garage with a puncture. It appears the damage is a nail or screw in the tyre wall, so a new tyre is required.
The garage informed them that they're required to replace all four tyres, surely not?? I've done a quick search and found nothing relevant and can't imagine why they've said this, other than thinking it's just sheer profiteering? Any ideas gents?

https://www.lesschwab.com/blog/post/...ur-awd-vehicle For the likes of our cars, the tolerance is apparently 4/32nds of an inch (3.2mm) difference between tyres. For Subarus, it is half that: http://www.souzastireservice.com/tir...g-awd-4wd.aspx Even having read through that, the 'actual' size of a tyre from a different manufacturer can be a different size (in circumference), despite being labelled as the same size.

You can get tyres 'scrubbed' in the US to avoid this exact situation - they will take tread off a brand new tyre until it matches the others on the car.
When this happens to me I buy a part-worn tyre of the same model and tread depth as the others. Usually plenty on ebay ![]() |

My Cavalier manual says the same thing - you need to replace all four tyres together.

Yep, it does happen.
Volvos XC90s especially have a very small tolerance when it comes to different tyre tread depths. Anything over a couple of mm difference can eventually wreck the diff. I do the same. Plenty of perfectly good premium brand tyres on ebay, just don't buy the cheapest!

Many thanks, I suspected their motive and you've confirmed it......let's see what their response is when I present a reasonable argument

Yup, that's the one. The GS1 2000 4x4 had the same setup and the same wording in the manual.
I'm lucky enough to own one of the very last off the line. I've owned that car for 17 years and I've been meaning to sell her for at least six of those but I can't bring myself to part with her! ![]() |
