I really do believe that if its a keeper then its worth shopping to find the best price for a replacement ZF one from TPS and anywhere else (maybe even ZF direct?) and bite the bullet and then have some piece of mind for a few more years

I really doubt it was new box. They have been out of production for years. Audi(or TPS) just take somebody's old box, send it to third party re-builder, then sell it again. Why else do you think they want your old box back?

Same goes for many other parts.
