Sean, I think that "bronze" coloured rod is the same one you can expose behind the light cover, if you can get at it through the ski hatch.

That said, cutting that hole is probably easier and not really that drastic. I was thinking of doing it as advance preparation given several issues with that catch.

Totally agree, as you can see it in the second to last photo in that post I linked to. It definitely looks like an 'easier' option of opening the boot, as you'd be leveraging only a few inches, as opposed to a few feet if doing it through the ski hatch.

I've also thought of pre-cutting it, as although I've got a ski hatch, there's a rather large LPG tank in the way! Might be a job for the summer months.
