Default Steering motor adjustment problem.

Hi there. New to this group hope all of you are doing good. I'll introduce myself in the right location after this post. I have a problem with the steering wheel motors..they both seem to be stuck. I tried lubricants and help the threaded shaft to rotate but not budging.... I still am working to try the VCDS route to test the system with the Ross tech but wondered if any of this was familiar to anyone? Thank you.

I've never had the problem, but have you tried a bit of gentle persuasion on the steering wheel at the same time you're pushing the button? i.e. Push the button to move the steering wheel out whilst pulling the steering wheel gently.

Hello Steamship.

Thank you for your reply.

I have tried wrestling with the wheel up and down quite forcefully for a bit with no luck.

I am unsure if it is the threaded rod that is meant to rotate?

As for the VAG diagnostic route is a no go. It found no module for it to talk to?

Ok. I have managed to remove the unit from the dash and oh boy were the corkscrew well and truly stuck. After about 3 hours of wd40 other all in one and lithium grease the fro and back is somewhat loose. But I managed to mangle the rear part of the screw (where a washer and clip reside) to allow me to rotate the screw with the gears disengaged from the motor. So it's kind of working. But it seems to seize again after a few back and fro again. Unless the battery is flat. Anyway I have put the batt to charge and will check again tomorrow. I am hesitating to do the same on the up down. As the screw and gearbox.is even more difficult to access.... how hard is it to replace the whole unit?

From watching your videos on it, and not being able to find anything specific about it, I think you are now our 'resident expert' on the subject.

I did come across something that might give you an idea of what's involved. In the following PDF from the D2 Tech Dump thread, there is a section about removing the dash panel. It starts on page 270 (Group 70, part 8.3) and goes to the first line on page 272, but since you won't be removing the dash panel itself, you can just concentrate on the parts around the steering column. Note that is doesn't involve instructions for removing the steering adjustment from the column, but should give better access.

I have good news, the fro and back is working now fine (it was the battery), I manage to try the up down and it does not seem to be as bad as the other one, using pliers, there is some movement, so I am hopeful.

Thank you for the info, quite detailed, but I took shortcuts, hope it's not going to give me grief when I put it all back together.

I'll try to get a short when I have both of them freed and fully repaired.
