my friend has his full fronts all done recently on a d3 4.2L. parts Lemforder fromECP for £1k and labour £200. mechanic is local indie

It is expensive but par for the course.
The 4 arms can be rather time consuming (it can go well or be seized and difficult to seperate) so probably has a fair bit of labour to make sure they don't lose out..

There is no upper wishbone.

I did all 8 arms on my D2 on the drive with a trolly jack and basic tools for under £150

Picked her back up this morning and everything seems a lot quieter, smoother and tighter.

If you say so. I don't have the S8 but I get the same when I drive my other car and then jump in to my V8
