Removing chrome tips - petrol
Hi folks,
I'm trying to clean my chrome tips as pretty black but hard to do with them on. Does anyone know is it possible to remove them temporarily? Perhaps with some WD40 and try to slide them off? I can't see if they're actually a removeable part.. Thanks.... IB

Assuming that they are all fitted the same way, then yes, you can remove them, and WD40 will be very useful.
If you look at this first photo, this is what the exhaust tip looks from the back. First step is to loosen up the bolt (I ended up replacing the old rusted bolt). I then used a large flat bladed screwdriver to wedge open the clamp a bit more. The large offset ring is the chrome exhaust tip. The next ring with the cut at the three o'clock position is the actual exhaust pipe, and within that is another 'split ring' (not sure of it's proper name) with the cut at the eight o'clock position. If you look at the second photo, I've moved the inner ring so that you can see how it's constructed, and this is what ultimately holds the exhaust tip in place. Once the bolt is loosened, it's then just a case of twisting and turning the exhaust tip until it comes off, although after faffing about with it what seemed like ages, I can't remember how I finally managed to remove it.

I would think that the inner ring is a support to stop the exhaust from being collapsed by over enthusiastic spanner use on the clamp bolt.
But from those photos I cannot see how the chrome tip is held. Is it in fact just a push fit?

From the shape of the inner ring, I was thinking that it was to allow for better alignment of the exhaust tip.

I always spray Dr Magic/Oven Pride into them on my TDI, it foams up and drips out black. Leave it overnight and then hose them next time you clean the car - repeat 2-3 times. I do this annually before the MOT so they think the DPF has no 'issues' as the inside become completly clean silver metal again..

Compared to the hour or so I see detailers using tons of metal polish this was a super hack. The BBQ cleaner literally hoofed the carbon deposits off... Nice one Snap...
