And given that the present infrastructure of underground electric cables is probably already being pushed to the limit in some towns and cities, overhead cables could be tapped into at regular intervals to provide electric vehicle charging points too.

The only real downside I can see is that overhead cables are a little unsightly, but I think that's a small price to pay.
