Great news and good effort all round What led t you yo try the D3 bushes?

No, that one is easy - the D3 bush is still available for £25 ish and fits straight in the D2 casting. Mark H discovered that. The two on the yoke at the back of the diff are trickier as the D3 ones are 4mm thinner and the D2 ones are unique. I'm thinking about simply milling down the D2 yoke to take the D3 bush. The D3 yoke can't be used as the geometry is slightly different.

It has to be useful for something right?

Mostly the discovery that the rear suspension is very similar based on the other thread about the control arm bushings so I acquired a bunch of D3 stuff including a rear subframe, hubs, brakes etc to see what was compatible.

Plus I bought one of every VAG subframe bush I could find of 93mm diameter, so Q7, Touareg, D3 etc in an attempt to find something which will work in the front that isn't £400 a set. No luck on that yet though.
